About South Sea pearls:

• The value of a South Sea pearl, besides size and surface imperfections, is closely tied to the intensity of its color. They have a color range that starts from white, but it is a white with silver tones, specific to this type of pearl, and moves through light yellow to very strong gold. The most expensive ones have a shade similar to 24-carat gold;

• Unlike the mirror-like luster of Akoya pearls, the surface of a South Sea pearl stands out for its satin appearance and seems to glow from within;

• While most white South Sea pearls come from Australia, the golden ones come primarily from the Philippines and Indonesia. They are sold at auctions organized by major South Sea pearl growers, in mixed lots of white and gold pearls, auctions held only a few times a year in Japan and Hong Kong. Because they are very rare, global stock is very small, so few stores carry South Sea pearl jewelry;

• They are the pearls with the thickest nacre, between 2 and 4 mm, and they have the longest formation time. If an Akoya pearl takes about 2 years to form, a Tahitian pearl about 2-3 years, a South Sea pearl can take up to 4 years;
